Captain Action as Captain America!

Captain Action was an action figure manufactured by Ideal Toys in the 1960s. The gimmick with the good Captain was that you could buy disguises to change him into all sorts of comics characters... including (obviously) Captain America!

  1. Captain Action, rocked, pure and simple. I finagled sveeral costumes out of my parents for birthdays and at least two Christmases -- Superman, Aquaman, Batman, the Green Hornet, Spider-Man, and (my father's choice) Steve Canyon). Never managed a Captain America though. I did have the parachute, however, and it did work!

  2. I never had the original Captain Action stuff myself, but I did collect the revived line... too bad that Playing Mantis couldn't have gotten the rights to reproduce the DC and Marvel stuff, because I think that would've really sold the line!

  3. I had the Captain America. Somewhere, I think I still own his belt and gun(!).

  4. Is it true they are making a new Captain Action-Captain America figure?

  5. I believe it will be an 8" Mego-style reproduction from Castaway toys, not a new 12" figure/uniform a la Playing Mantis.

Ah, what might have been. I would have loved to have seen the Speed Racer and Jonny Quest sets Playing Mantis had planned.
